KUALA LUMPUR :
Tourism Malaysia has opted into a strategic partnership with Visa Malaysia in the spirit of visiting Malaysia 2020 (VM2020) to boost the tourism industry in the country.

Tourism Malaysia's general manager, Datuk Musa Yusof, said that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inked between the two sides today will help promote Malaysia as a preferred destination and improve visitors ' experience in the country, particularly in the shopping segment.

"We're sure we'll be able to draw a greater number of inbound visitors as Visa becomes a chosen payment partner to help promote Malaysia," he said.

The MoU was signed by Musa and Visa Malaysia country manager, Ng Kong Boon.

Musa said that, from January to September 2019, shopping was Malaysia's largest tourist share and accounted for 35.2 percent of the total tourist revenue at RM 23.3 billion.

This showed an increase of 14.4 percent compared to 2018, he said.

In the meantime, Ng said that the partnership will benefit from the Visa Preferred Merchant Program (VPM) that provides a range of common incentives and advantages for visitors to Malaysia.

Visa cardholder benefits include eating, shopping, family entertainment, and healthcare.

"To further support Tourist Malaysia to advance Malaysia as its leading tourist destination we will enhance our research ability to provide insights into travelers visiting Malaysia and our robust global network," he said.
