SINGAPORE :

A new tagline is sought by Singapore now it wishes to be "a city in nature."

To do this, 1 million trees will be planted in the next 10 years – double the rate at present – as they brace for a hotter climate.

In order to cool itself down, the city is looking not only for the shade of trees but also for the reduction of emissions of hydrofluorocarbons by limiting the supply of coolers, air conditioners and industrial water chillers using the chemical from 2022.

Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli said Wednesday in Parliament that certain forms of HFCs are trapping substantially more heat in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.

Such newly announced plans come with Singapore planning a $100 billion warrant against global warming and to safeguard its coastlines from higher maritime speeds.

n the last six decades, according to the government's weather service, the city was already warming twice the world average and only reported its warmest decade.

Planting trees aside would add 200 hectares of natural parks by 2030, two and half times the size of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, said Minister Desmond Lee of National Development.

In the same period, species conservation plans for 70 more native and plant species have also been introduced, 30 hectares of woodland, marine, and coastal habitats have been restored and ecosystems have been enhanced at least 50% of Singapore's gardens, parks, and streetscapes.
