KUALA LUMPUR:

Airbnb welcomed the latest guidelines for short-term accommodation (STA) from the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), which would help drive the recovery in the tourism sector and generate more local jobs in Malaysia.

Airbnb today said in a statement that the new guidelines would simplify registration and encourage the hospitality of residents, especially seniors citizens and locals in the B40 community.

Airbnb Head of Public Policy (South-Eastern Asia) Mich Goh said that the Guidelines are a valuable framework for policymakers to determine how best to govern short term accommodation on the local scale.

Goh said that the changes to the short-term accommodation rules could serve as a regulatory boost for some governments and can enable the tourism industry to recover more quickly and more strongly.

"We broadly welcome these new Guidelines, which will lead us to simple, responsive short-term accommodation rules in Malaysia.

"The new guidelines offer municipalities a way to both improve and ensure compliance with the visitors, although we know each of the local areas is different," she said.

"Airbnb and the community at Airbnb are a part of the Malaysian tourist industry, facing unparalleled challenges at the moment, along with hoteliers, airlines, travel agents, and other short-term rental platforms.

"We're committed to continuing to be a good partner for the Malaysian Government and to cooperate to ensure that short-term, sustainable growth and the recovery of the local tourism industry continue to thrive," she said.

The host and guest community in Airbnb generated over RM3 billion in Malaysia in 2019, with senior hosts earning RM9 billion in 2018 over the age of 60 years.
