JAKARTA :

An albino orangutan, once known to the world, has been found alive and well being released to a jungle in Borneo, Indonesia over a year ago.

The blue-eyed primate with its white-coated body was taken from the villagers who adopted it as a pet in 2017.

The albino orangutans named Alba were later released into the jungle in late 2018.

This week, the Borneo Orangutans Rescue Foundation saw Alba as they were monitoring three other orangutans who were released into the same forest recently.

"After discovering that it can build its own home, look for its own food and no longer need to rely on human help, we conclude that it can already live in the wild," said Indra Exploitasia, director of the Ministry of Environment for Biodiversity Conservation.

The success of saving Alba is positive news for the critically endangered species especially as its habitat has declined drastically over the past few decades, largely due to the destruction of forests for timber, paper, palm oil and mining.

It is understood that farm workers and villagers often attack the species because they see it as a pest.

In addition, hunters often catch the animals for sale as pets.
