SEOUL:

North Korea is actively seeking to enlist Mount Paekdu as a sacred mountain in the country as a UNESCO global geopark.

"Scientists in relevant fields of the DPRK made scientific proof of its geological features and world value through scores of years-long survey and research," the North's official Korean Central News Agency said, stressing the mountain's rich biodiversity and geological significance.

DPRK stands for the North's official name, Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

A geopark constitutes an area designated by UNESCO with international geological heritage.

The north presented its request to the UN Office in 2018, according to the report, following a decision of the North Korean National Commissioner on UNESCO to enroll the Mountain Paekdu area as the global geopark in 2018.

The Mount Paekdu application is currently subject to UNESCO review, it added.

Mount Paekdu is said to be the birthplace of Kim Il-sung, the founding leader of North Korea, a point widely disputed by outside experts.
