HONGKONG:

According to the EU Office to Hong Kong and Macao, more than 10% of European Union (EU) people in Hong Kong have fled in the last 18 months due to harsh anti-epidemic efforts.

The EU Office in Hong Kong and Macao said in a statement on Friday that it was concerned about the city's flight bans, travel restrictions, and protracted quarantine periods, which had forced many EU citizens to flee.

The office went on to say that it had written to the city's officials, expressing its concerns about the traffic and raising other issues such as school closures and the separation of Covid-positive youngsters from their families.

"We also request discussion, not only to express our worries but also to share our experience and provide support to the Hong Kong community," the official said, expressing gratitude to medical staff and frontline responders as Hong Kong faces a growing Covid-19 outbreak.

Despite the outbreak, the city has maintained some of the tightest travel restrictions in the world. Incoming visitors must stay in a hotel for up to 14 days and be tested frequently for Covid-19.

On Tuesday, authorities stated that a ban on flights from nine nations, including Australia, India, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, would be prolonged until April 20.
