Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed confidence that the upgraded Sultan Azlan Shah Airport (LTSAS) will become a major catalyst for Perak’s development, particularly in the sectors of trade, industry, and tourism.
Speaking at the official launching ceremony for the airport’s improvement and upgrading works, Anwar lauded the initiative undertaken by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and described the enhancement as a strategic move to strengthen the state’s economic potential.
“I extend my thanks because previously, efforts to improve certain areas were hindered by the limited number of flights from Kuala Lumpur. Many chose to drive instead,” Anwar said. “Now, we are thinking more broadly — with flights from Senai, Singapore, and potentially expanded routes to Kinabalu and Kuching. This will give a unique appeal to the airport.”
Anwar emphasised that airports, like other transportation hubs, are highly strategic assets managed under the national transport portfolio and are deemed a priority for the country.
Also present at the event were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, and Malaysia Airports managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani.
Acknowledging the significant costs involved in developing major transport infrastructure, Anwar stressed that investments in airports, highways, and projects like the East Coast Rail Link are crucial for national progress and long-term tourism growth.
He noted that public-private partnerships, such as the upgrade of Ipoh Airport driven by the private sector and state leadership, have helped ease the financial burden on the federal government.
“This provides room for development without putting pressure on government finances,” he said.
Earlier this year, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced that RM60 million had been approved for LTSAS’s expansion. The upgrade included a redesigned terminal layout, boosting annual passenger capacity by 40 per cent to 700,000. Terminal space has been expanded by over 10 per cent, while peak-hour passenger handling capacity has more than doubled, from 240 to 510 passengers.
Additionally, holding lounges have been significantly enlarged, immigration facilities upgraded with more counters and automated gates, and security enhanced with advanced CCTV systems. The Flight Information Display System was also enhanced, with the number of units doubled from five to ten.
