KUALA LUMPUR:

Following the difficult situation faced by the COVID-19 pandemic, Air Asia Bhd may lay off over 300 employees to pare down its operations.

This lay off is expected to involve 111 out of 1,900 cabin crew, 172 pilots and 50 Engineers, it was announced by Chief Executive Officer Riad Asmaand in an internal briefing session.

“Everyone involved in the job cuts will be notified by email within 24 hours. AirAsia also promises compensation to all involved,” the report said.

As Riad was quoted, the restructuring of the organization was considered at this stage as a viable alternative because the low-cost operator was not available to ensure that it continued to operate as it used to be.

The report also stated that AirAsia X's Long-haul budget carrier, including foreign employees, would also reduce its workforce.

However, no actual number of employees involved has been announced and the proposed job cuts will affect various sectors of the workforce, including management, operations, crew, and pilots.
