South Korean airline Asiana Airlines Inc. said it would be offering domestic sightseeing passengers pandemic air flights next month.

"Flights to nowhere"-air travel solely for the purpose of travel, not destination — will be provided on October 24 and 25, said Asiana.

The almost two-hour journey will take place on a passenger jet of the Asiana A380 superjumbo focused on the coronavirus pandemic.

The touring flights will depart from and land at the International Airport of Incheon, which passes Gangneung and Pohang on the east side, Gimhae near Busan southwest port and the west-eastmost Jeju resort island.

Fares range from 205,000 won (US$ 175.5) for the economy class to 305,000 won for the business class package, with just 310 seats offered on the basis of social distance regulations, roughly 185 short of the available seats.

All travellers can receive 50 percent discount coupons for domestic routes and miles along with an amenities package.

"Asiana has come up with the idea of special flights for passengers eager to take to the skies," an airline official said. "We hope the COVID-19 outbreak will come to an end as soon as possible so that anyone can take air trips without any misgivings."

Asiana will be the first local airline to commence general passenger sightseeing flights. On Friday, low-cost airline Air Busan provided the 60 university students who are trained in air tourism with a domestic sightseeing trip.

A day later, Tigerair Taiwan flew a sightseeing flight from Taipei to the skies over South Korea's Jeju island with 120 passengers on board.

The coronavirus pandemic has pounded airlines across the world, sending demand for international air travel hitting the skids.
