MALAYSIA:

The government's announcement that a new road will be built in the Cameron Highlands from Habu to Tanah Rata will aid in easing traffic in the well-known highlands vacation town.

Leong Yu Man, chairman of the Pahang Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee, described the initiative as a two-pronged strategy since it would have significant positive effects on the local tourism business.

"Since Cameron Highlands is a well-known tourist destination and because this problem has existed for some time, congestion there frequently happens on weekends and during school breaks.

When called here today, she said: "The construction of a new road is a win-win solution not only for tourists and the locals but also in terms of the logistics of the food supply chain because vegetable farming is the main source of income for Cameron Highlands folks."

Leong made this statement in response to a question on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement that a new road from Habu to Tanah Rata would be built at RM480 million during the Budget 2023 presentation at the Dewan Rakyat on Friday.

Ho Chi Yang, an assemblyman from Tanah Rata, believed that environmental considerations would be taken into account when the project was implemented.

He expressed his optimism that a thorough analysis had been done and that the construction will have a negligible effect on the environment and continue to be sustainable.

When the road is finished, Abdul Hadi Harun, 30, a rental car provider in Cameron Highlands, hopes it will increase the district's value and guarantee that it continues to be a well-liked tourism destination.

He claims that this will also benefit the neighborhood's economy, which is heavily dependent on the presence of tourists.

"Nowadays, some people decide not to travel to Cameron Highlands during specific seasons, such as school breaks, to avoid being delayed in traffic for an extended period.

Yet, he added, "as a player in the tourism business, we want to see as many people as possible...the building of the new route will undoubtedly give users an alternative.
