MALAYSIA:

Minister for Tourism, Art and the Culture Nancy Shukri has assured the stakeholders and tourist organisations, which have had a serious impact in the Covid-19 pandemic, that ongoing discussions are taking place.

This comes after Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economic Affairs) Mustapa Mohamed urged the tourism sector to submit a working paper to the Council of Economic Action (EAC).

In a statement, Nancy said efforts to help the tourism industry by Mustapa’s office were in line with those taken by her ministry.

She said she had her ministry with all stakeholders "continuously in communication." "As an example (Ministry) had held five discussions in February of this year through the Crisis Management Taskforce (CMT) involving more than 30 representatives of industrial organisations, in order to obtain feedback about their challenges and recommendations."

Nancy said her department had studied "every suggestion" made by the players in the industry, and that she had been committed to deal with matters or complaints within her remit.

She said, however, that issues not covered within the Ministry have been raised, such as the wage subsidies programme, international border re-opening, and the temporary 50 percent reduction in the passenger service fee (PSC) at airports.

“In these matters, all recommendations and motions brought up have been brought to the relevant ministries for further action,” she said.

Nancy also said that she had discussed with the National Security Council (MKN) several issues relating to tourism.

“As a result, tourism activities under the conditional movement control order (CMCO) and recovery movement control order (RMCO) areas were allowed,” she said.

She said that the government had announced that the arts, cultural and heritage facilities such as museums and art galleries would be reopened to the public.

Mustapa had earlier stated that while there were signs of recovery in certain sectors such as services, manufacturing, agriculture, and construction, the pandemic still is impacting tourism operators.
