ICELAND :

In order to ease international travel for those inoculated against Covid-19, Iceland gave its first vaccination certificate, authorities said, with EU countries still dealing over the use of such documents.

The Ministry of Health, which created a website for distribution, confirmed that all 4800 Islanders who have received two doses of vaccine are eligible for the digital certification.

“The aim to facilitate the movement of people between countries so that the individuals can show a vaccination certificate during border checks and be exempt from border restrictions,” the ministry said. However, the documents have yet to be recognised internationally.

Iceland which is not a member of the EU but part of the open travel zone of the Schengen bloc plans to permit the entry of most Europeans with similar certificates.

But Brussels still seeks to reach an agreement on certificates between the Member States. Greece supports the idea of improving its tourism sector which is struggling.

But EU heavyweights France and Germany say that vaccinated people and uncertainty about whether people who are inoculated can pass on the virus are still premature.

The European Commission has announced that 11 Member States have confirmed their use of vaccination certificates and seven more countries are preparing to continue with them. The documents do not permit holders to freely travel within the EU at this time.

Icelandic medical authorities agree that it is not yet clear whether those infected are less likely or not to spread the virus to others following vaccination.
