KOTA KINABALU:

Hotels in Sabah has creatively exploited the downturn in tourism following the scare of the coronavirus by developing enticing packages for visitors, including half the price of their rooms.

Checks suggest that many hotels, including five-star resorts, have enticing packages to compensate for the decline in sales.

With airlines that offer spectacular rates for domestic flights, this could be the perfect time for holidays.

Gordon Seet, Chairman of Sabah and Labuan Malaysian Hotel Association (MAH), said hotels have experienced a significant decline in bookings due to the coronavirus.

"So city hotels and resorts are now trying, by providing irresistible fares during this time, to drive more domestic trip to Sabah and Sarawak and to West Malaysia and Brunei.

"Indeed, it'd be the best time to travel because our airlines offer tickets both for destinations in Malaysia and the world at attractive prices. This opportunity can and should be taken by leisure and business travelers," he said.

Seet said that the Sabah hotel industry was only secondary to Kuala Lumpur, with losses over RM10 million as of the previous week.
