ISRAEL:

Train services are sluggish, buses are frequently cancelled, and there are significant traffic bottlenecks. Israelis struggle to improve traffic, much like people in many other nations worldwide.

Data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2019 show that traffic congestion costs Israel's economy two percent of its yearly gross domestic product, making it a "serious" issue.

In Israel, a nation with a population of nearly 9 million and one of the highest fertility rates in the OECD, there are currently about 3.5 million private cars, and this number is steadily increasing.

Buses are the principal mode of public transportation in the nation. Because the public transportation network is not sufficiently developed to serve such areas, there are some areas with restricted access to public transportation, particularly in the country's periphery.

"Israelis favor driving their automobiles because of this. Driving a private car is a logical choice if they have no other viable option "said Yoram Ida, chair of Sapir Academic College's public administration and policy department.

Ida claims that Israel's roads are congested due to a lack of investment in public transportation, which has a significant financial impact.

In addition, he continued, there had been an unbalanced rise in infrastructure projects compared to the number of new cars that were added to the road each year.

A light rail train system is being constructed in Tel Aviv to help Israel's public transportation system, and one of the first lines is scheduled to open later this year.

However, "These actions could all be viewed as being made too late. This (traffic) issue will only get worse until the government does something to make driving a private vehicle less appealing "Ida stated.

"It is challenging to alter reality. Both the infrastructure and people's habits need to change, "Lara Paran, the chief executive officer of the nonprofit 15 Minutes Public Transportation Alliance, concurred.
