KUALA LUMPUR:

The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has installed in its toilets the new technology to minimise COVID-19 spread.

Datuk Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh, Group Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said it was introduced with the use of an Ultraviolet Chamber (UVC) automated system, generating ultraviolet light that slaughters airborne pathogens.

“Installation of the UVC has been completed for 24 toilets and will continue in phases over the next few months.

“Airport safety is among the highest concerns among our airport guests, so it is crucial for us to keep exploring new ways to allay these concerns,” he said in a statement.

The low periods of travel permitted the rapid installation of the UVC which is part of a toilet renovation effort and minimised interruptions to the activity of the airport.

“The new toilets have been benchmarked against other world-class design concepts to provide the best and safest passenger experience.

“With these new toilets, we hope to continue scaling up our service delivery quality, maintaining high hygiene standards and improving passenger satisfaction,” he added.

The renovation of the toilet was listed as a mission-critical project for MAHB and was carried out on a total of 225 toilets since June 2017. In spite of ambitious steps to contain costs, it proceeded rapidly.

The final project for 94 toilets is currently ongoing and is scheduled for completion in June next year.

He said that in December of this year, 22 newly renovated toilets would open.

KLIA2 has recently secured the top position in the category Public Transport Stop of the National Public Toilet Competition held jointly with World Toilet Day 2020 by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT).
