KOTA KINABALU :

The state capital of Sabah, governed by the town hall Kota Kinabalu (DBKK), has come a long way from being granted the status of a town twenty years ago on February 2, 2000.

DBKK has been awarded two awards not only through its DBKK e-services initiative, the ICT Cultural Innovation Award at the State level and its State Secretary of Special Innovation Award, but also with a 5-star ranking of the National Audit Department for its financial management transparency index.

Earlier this week Kota Kinabalu received the Asean Clean Tourist City Quality Award at the ASEAN Tourism Forum in Brunei and was listed as one of the 3 cleanest cities in the region.

The other two were George Town in Penang and Putrajaya.

"Winning awards and prizes does not signify we'll rest on our laurels," Mayor Datuk Nordin Siman told a media conference on Wednesday 2 February a few days before the city's twentieth anniversary.

He said DBKK wants to offer people better services and achieve a zero-waste target in town.

"We have the bike path, we have new parks, city embellishment with respect to lighting, and we also launched our online services last year. However, many still prefer counter-services to online services," he said.

Meanwhile, DBKK Director-General cum Kota Kinabalu City’s 20th Anniversary Celebration Committee Chairperson, Noorliza Awang Alip , said it is a learning process for DBKK.

"The same goes for our revenue base we started 20 years ago, I think we barely got 60 million RM, but we now get over twice as much as we did then.I know that most of you who live in Kota Kinabalu will see a huge difference from 20 years ago, "she added.

For the city's 20th anniversary celebrations, a number of 18 programs have been created, taking place over three days from Jan 31.

"You can see cleanliness gaps and our e-services and computer systems have improved, we have the ' KK Wifi, ' and we've also partnered with Mampu to handle development plans," she said.
