According to the MasterCard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2021, Malaysia has once again topped the list of best Muslim-friendly holiday destinations for Muslim travelers.
Malaysia remained the top-ranked destination in the GMTI 2021 as it had been since the index's inception in 2015, which tracks the overall performance of the Muslim travel market.
In her keynote speech at the Halal In Travel Global Summit 2021, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri stated that Malaysia remains fully supportive and committed to further developing the Muslim-friendly travel segment, which has grown in importance to the global tourism market.
She also cited the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC), a Motac organization in charge of Islamic tourism-related matters, including Islamic tourism research and training, as significant contributions to the recognition.
“Perhaps ITC's competitive advantage is its position as a global leader in Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality among foreign locations, government agencies, and tourism organizations.
ITC's regional and international involvement includes serving as chair of many committees to develop guidelines and standards for Muslim-Friendly tourist services,” she said at a virtual conference.
Nancy explained that one of ITC's main initiatives is the Muslim-Friendly Accommodation Recognition (MFAR) program, which recognizes hotels and resorts that cater to the Muslim tourist market's demands. So far, ITC has recognized 44 hotels around the country under the MFAR program.
The GMTI 2021 research rates 140 destinations based on their ability to attract the Muslim tourism market in the Covid-19 climate, taking into account key variables like as accessibility, environment, and travel destination services.
