KUALA LUMPUR:

Multiple award-winning show Matilda The Musical is set to play at Istana Budaya in KL, starting on June 2.

Matilda The Musical, inspired by the 1988 children's book by British author Roald Dahl, follows the story of a precocious five-year-old girl who loves reading, and has the natural gift of telekinesis. This musical stage version, commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), was adapted by British playwright and film/television writer Dennis Kelly with music and lyrics by Australian composer-comedian Tim Minchin.

Since its premiere at the RSC's The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in London in November 2010, the musical has played in the West End, and Broadway.

It also went on to win seven Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, in 2012, and five Tony Awards in 2013.

The KL season of Matilda The Musical, presented by Tremendous Entertainment Limited, is the fourth leg of the original London West End musical’s Asian tour after stops in Singapore, China and Bangkok.

The musical centres on Matilda, a very smart girl who is suppressed by her TV-obsessed parents and pay her little attention. As she grows up, she begins to resist the challenges and obstacles presented to her, learning that sometimes you have to be a "little bit naughty" in order to get through life. Tunes such as The Smell Of Rebellion, When I Grow Up and Revolting Children will give you a glimpse into spunky Matilda's life.

Her world is thrown into disarray as she starts life in a new school (Crunchem Hall Elementary) under the tyrannical grip of headteacher Miss Trunchbull. In the story, Matilda seeks solace in the library, losing herself in a world of books and wonderful imagination. She also forms strong bonds with adults such as librarian Mrs Phelps and her class teacher Miss Honey.

Together, they give her the confidence to embrace her special gift and individuality.

Tickets for 'Matilda The Musical' goes on sale today.
