MALAYSIA:

The Malaysian Tour and Travel Agents Association (MATTA) has received remarks from the Transport Ministry of Malaysia that the National Security Council has been actively discussing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the operation of domestic cruises.

The president of Matta, Datuk Tan Kok Liang, said that he is now working in close cooperation with partners such as the Singapore office of the Costa Crociere SPA, and the Ministry of Arts and Culture, to revive the tourist industry that is distressingly distressed.

He said that cruise products like these have already been launched in various countries such as Singapore and have succeeded in stimulating the local economy much needed.

In the United Kingdom, domestic cruises will also resume starting on 17 May.

"Matta has long recognised the immense potential of the cruise industry which benefits not only travel agencies but also hotels, the aviation sector, theme parks, attractions, retail and many other tourism-related industries. A single ship, like the Costa Venezia, with a capacity of 5,000 passengers can generate revenue of up to RM60 million.

"In addition to that, domestic cruises especially during these trying times, have the potential to generate thousands of jobs almost immediately especially in port cities like Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi and Melaka," said Tan in a statement.

The association has engaged the relevant Ministers for years not only in the implementation of domestic cruises as a rapid-win solution during this time of crisis, but also more importantly in recognising Malaysia as a home-haven destination,Matta Honorary General Secretary Nigel wong said.

He said that the country already had the infrastructure and personnel needed to serve this emerging and very profitable sector.

"The long-term benefits of having home-port status are immense especially since Malaysia is recognised worldwide as a very modern, and progressive Muslim-friendly destination. Tourists from all over the globe will fly into Malaysia to embark on their cruise holiday and, in the process will very likely extend their stay in Malaysia.

"Needless to say, one can only imagine the untapped potential we have at our fingertips. We would like to commend both the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture and the Ministry of Transportation in their efforts to open up this industry.
