JOHOR BARU:

The construction of a new mosque is underway and will be managed by Masjid An-Nur Corporation Bhd, a unit under Johor Corporation (JCorp).

JCorp president and chief executive officer Datuk Kamaruzzaman Abu Kassim said the project for the seventh mosque to be managed by Masjid An-Nur Corporation Bhd is being finalized.

“We are still working on details like the design of the mosque,’’ he said at the launch of Galeri An-Nur at Masjid Sultan Iskandar in Bandar Dato Onn here.

The Turkish Ottoman-inspired Masjid Sultan Iskandar also received certification from Malaysia Tourism Quality Assurance (MyTQA) as the first tourism mosque in the country.

Kamaruzzaman said the site for the new mosque costing about RM10mil has been identified.

It is on the roof top parking area of Menara Komtar JBCC in Jalan Wong Ah Fook.

He said it would take about three years to build the mosque, which will have space for a congregation of 750, adding that it would cater to Muslim workers, visitors as well as shoppers in downtown Johor Baru.

“It will also cater to visitors coming from Singapore via the JB Sentral building located within walking distance from Menara Komtar JBCC,’’ added Kamaruzzaman.

He said it was targeted that some 40,000 Muslims and non-Muslims would visit Masjid Sultan Iskandar in conjunction with Visit Johor Year 2020 and Malaysia Games (Sukma 2020) to be held in the state.

Masjid Sultan Iskandar is the sixth mosque built by JCorp in 2013 and can accommodate up to 4,600 at a time.

Kamaruzzaman said in May this year, the mosque played host to non-Muslim visitors, including Japanese tourists, at breaking of fast during Ramadan.

“We look forward to organizing the buka puasa programme again for visitors next year,’’ he said.
