JOHARBARU:

The rooms at Tanjung Piai and Pontian from homestays and hotels are being snapped up. All the rooms from Nov 1 until Nov 17 have been fully booked ahead of next month’s by-election.

When interacted in a hotel, a clerk named Nor Esilah Mohd Ali said that all the rooms have been booked from November 1. He said the rush and booking requests started off from October 1 when the Election Commission (EC) announced the dates for nomination and voting.

He said, “There are only two rooms available now – a large one which can accommodate about four people and another small one that can only fit two people”.

With the recent termination and closure of Kukup International Ferry Terminal, a lot of homestays and hotel in the area was affected and has now again gained importance because of the declared by-election.

Ee, who has been running the homestay in Kampung Nelayan Air Masin Kukup for the last 10 years said “This place has been quiet for the past few weeks following the closure. I am glad that visitors are coming again, ”.

Another homestay owner who has around 4 properties in that respective area, named Ghazali Ahmad, 48, said all four of his houses were booked for the by-election and he was getting the booking request way ahead of the by-election announcement for voting dates. He said that mostly the members or supporters of political parties involved in the by-election campaign and enforcement officers have booked it before the election for smooth execution.

The Tanjung Piai by-election is fixed dated Nov 16, with the nomination day on Nov 2 and early voting on Nov 12. Johor Tourism, Women, Family and Community Development Committee Chairman Liow Cai Tung said the by-election held was expected to help boost the tourism industry in Tanjung Piai as this location will be highlighted for the next few days. The by-election was basically called after the seat left vacant following the decimation of Datuk Dr Md Farik Md Rafik on Sept 21.
