To consolidate relations and interact between Norway and Sabah, Norway officially opened an Honorary Consulate in Sabah. The Sabah government supports the establishment of an Honorary Consulate here, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said.
He said all the Malaysian federal states belong to this close friendship and the number of tourists and business people traveling throughout the country in Norway is growing.
"Average annual visits to Sabah by more than 700 Norwegians. I'm glad to welcome you, and I'm sure many interesting places will be found here.
"Bilateral relations were established in 1968 between Norway and Malaysia and for over 50 years they were good and friendly.
"We are honored that our state has given Norway a great deal of emphasis and that it has chosen Sabah as its only consulate location," he said on launch, which took place here on Monday at Kg Melawa, Sepanggar Bay. The Deputy Chief Minister of Tourism and Culture, Datuk Christina Liew, read his speech.
Shafie also welcomed Norway's Honorary Consul in Malaysia and Anders Moller to the state's Honorary Consul group.
With the establishment of the consulate, he hoped that Norway and Sabah could become more involved and that more Norwegians would come and explore the State.
