GEORGETOWN:

According to  State Housing, Local Government, and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo, the planned Penang Hill Cable Car project has received overwhelming public support.

During the first round of the survey, Jagdeep Singh said about 95% of the 2,000 survey respondents supported the proposed cable car project.

“The survey was conducted over a two-year period but the (feedback) process will be ongoing and we welcome all views (from the public),” he told reporters after officiating the Penang Hill Draft Special Area Plan (SAP) 2020 (Replacement) public display here.

The lower cable station of the project, namely Teluk Bayang, Balik Pulau, Rifle Club, Youth Park, Turf Club, Penang Hill Lower Station, and Paya Terubong was proposed for a total of seven places, according to Penang Hill SAP (Substitution).

The planned landing points for the upper stations of the cable car are near the hill entry to The Habitat, behind the Penang Hill Mosque, behind the police station in Penang Hill, and beside the upper station of Penang Hill.

On 16 October, Penang State Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow told the State Legislative Assembly that this year in November the Penang Hill Cable Car Project will receive a request for a proposal (RFP).

Chow added that the project was expected to take between three and four years to complete and begin operations.

Meanwhile, on the Penang Hill SAP (Substitution) public display, Jagdeep said review counters would be set up in three locations namely, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Hallway at Level 3, Komtar; Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) Hallway, and the Penang Hill Lower Station between Oct 26 and Dec 28.

“The Draft SAP is also available online at www.jpbd.penang.gov.my. We hope that the public would submit their feedback within this two months period," he said.
