PENANG :
A special recognition has been obtained by the unique Penang International Paddy Festival (PIPF) by receiving the 2019 Malaysian Landscape Architecture Awards. The awards ceremony will take place in the St Giles Wembley Hotel in George Town on 14 August this year.

The first PIPF edition took place during August 2018, and last year at Kampung Terus in Penanti, hosted by Penanti Parliamentary Service Center and the Permatang Pauh Parliamentary Service Center.

In each edition that took place at one of the oldest padi sites in Seberang Perai in the 1800s, thousands of visitors and tourists spent three days crowding this festival.

The goal was to maintain and promote the 1,015 acres of patrimonial padi field in Kampung Terus and enable the local farmers to retain the Padi patrimony that could be used for food protection while simultaneously developing the site as a touristic attraction.

The PIPF's one unique feature was that at least 15 padi sculptures were created by the villagers of Kampung Terus, like buffalo and scarecrow, made of rice straws that were discarded.

Other exciting activities included cathing fish in the padi fields, local painting by local artist, kite exhibitions, padi tug war activity and traditional clothing (kain pelikat) football competitions in the padi area.

The person who led this successful project was Dr Norlela Ariffin, Chairman of the Committee for State Agriculture, Agribusiness, Rural Development and Health.

Dr. Norlela also hopes to establish Kampung Terus in the Sungai Terus with houseboats project to improve sustainable tourism in the region and to support local communities.

She said the idea came from her previous visit to Kerala,India.

"We want a house boat that looks conventional from the outside but has a good interior with a comfortable cabin, kitchen and more.

She also added that they plan to start with six for this year and hope to make atleast three out of them.

The estimated cost is around RM2 Million for each and therefore if there's any private investors are intrested , they are welcomed for a joint venture.
