PENANG:

If the COVID-19 pandemic could be controlled better, the Penang government would consider reopening five parks on the island.

State Housing, Local Government, and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said six out of 178 park areas under the control of the Municipal Council of Penang Island (MBPP) have at this moment been closed.

According to him in the Japanese Garden, Jalan Gangsa (Lorong Delima 11), and the Solok Tembaga (Lorong Delima 9), and the Padang Kota Lama playground, there were six temporarily closed areas.

“We will continue to monitor if the current situation allows, then we will review the decision (to reopen the parks).

“But even if we do reopen the parks, the public must be disciplined and strictly follow the given standard operating procedures (SOPs),” he said in a press conference at Penang City Hall here.

Meanwhile, MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang, who was also present at the press conference said that they would seek advice from the state health department on whether the Japanese Garden recreational park could be reopened.

“Whereas for the remaining four recreational parks (except for the Padang Kota Lama playground), we will have to ensure that the situation is more under control before reopening them,” he added.
