On Wednesday Qantas announced the latest innovative flight offering to battle the closure of the international frontiers.

The plan is to operate three domestic mystery flights on weekends so that visitors can enjoy a unique Australian experience.

On Thursday, 4 March, seats were sold on Qantas Mystery Flight Experience for travel in March, April, and May.

All-inclusive fares include AUD 737 (USD 569) for the economy and AUD 1,579 (USD 1,219) for business, including foods, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, plus activities on the ground.

All three flights will operate on a net-zero emission basis with 100% carbon offset emissions.

Qantas has developed the concept and offers three mystery flight experiences from Boeing 737, which include not just flights and activities, but also an entire day of activity in the most mysterious destination. Every destination is outside major cities.

The last time mystery flights were operated by Qantas in the '90s, travelers would arrive at the airport and take up seats on scheduled flights to any of the destinations of the airline and have spent a day at home before flying.

Within approximately two hours the limited mystery flights from Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne will depart.

To achieve a unique onboard experience, some low-level landmark scenic flybys on the way are included (subject to weather conditions and air traffic control).

According to Qantas, experiences on the ground could range from a winemaking course in a primer region to a gourmet lunch with musical entertainment on the shores of one of the tropical island wonders of Australia.

Customers will be given clues to ensure that their areas of interest are on a suitable trip and to assist in packaging a snorkel or sneakers in their baggage.

Stephanie Tully, Chief Customer Officer of Qantas Group, said the mysterious flights provided Australia with an unforgettable travel experience and the development of domestic tourism.

“Our customers tell us that where they can and can’t travel within Australia has been a bit of a mystery lately,” she said.

“The vaccine rollout is bringing a lot more certainty and domestic border restrictions should soon be a thing of the past. In the meantime, these flights turn that mystery into a positive by creating a unique experience for the many people keen to start traveling again.

Qantas’ Mystery Flight Experiences follow its Flight to Nowhere (when domestic border closures were at their peak) and Flight to Somewhere (when initial reopening began last year), which proved extremely popular.
