A team of Penang delegates will head on to China for a Roadshow that is set to be happening from 22nd - 27th May in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong respectively with a concept of "Re-Experience Penang with Heart: 6 New Ways to Have Fun”
In his opening remarks at the press conference held today, YB Yeoh Soon Hin, the Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy acknowledged the unprecedented challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, especially to the tourism industry which has been hit hard. However, despite the setbacks, YB Yeoh and his team have remained optimistic and passionate and have continued to implement plans, measures and promotions to ensure the sustainability of the industry and its players. There are three stages of the state's promotional efforts in response to the challenges brought on by the pandemic: pre-pandemic, during the pandemic, and post-pandemic. As the world gradually eases international borders control, the promotional effort invested beforehand has shown its encouraging result.
China has always been one of Penang's most important markets. Prior to the pandemic, Penang welcomed countless Chinese tourists to its shores every year, and China was among the top three arrivals countries in Penang. With the reopening of China's borders, China Southern Airlines has resumed the direct flights between Guangzhou and Penang since 1st March, 2023. The frequency of flights has increased from 4 times a week at its initial stage to once a day since late April 2023 to cope with the growing number of China Tourists coming into Penang.
Continuing the momentum, there will be a 'Experience Penang' roadshow held at Guangzhou and Shenzhen held together with Southern China Airlines, with Business to Business (B2B) session included to provide direct opportunity for industry players of these destinations to learn about the latest information for Penang.
The team of delegates from Penang consists of the most versatile representatives in the industry namely hoteliers, attractions operators, travel agencies, medical facilities, wedding professionals, and "Malaysia My Second Home" agencies. This team is also by far, having the highest number of participants compared to previous years with over 40 personnels from these industries joining this roadshow to China. With this, Penang will definitely be showcasing the most diverse, exciting, and newest aspects through participation from these industries which will ultimately bring tourists to come and explore the limitless potential of Penang.
The campaign will continue to leverage the high-volume traffic at Guangzhou Daily building located at the prime area of Guangzhou. A photography exhibition will be held with different faces of Penang being exhibit to awe the China citizens. Digital ads on Guangzhou Daily's website are placed to continue the vibe, in hope to influence its readers in choosing Penang as their next travel destination.
In order to maximize the effort of promoting Penang to Chinese tourists, the promotional roadshow will also proceed to include advertising the beauty of Penang through Out of Home (OOH) platform available on Hong Kong's iconic transport - tram that intends to capture the eyes of Hong Kong citizens with mesmerizing scenes of Penang roaming on the streets of Hong
Before ending his speech, YB Yeoh Soon Hin stated that the success the earlier promotional activities has not only helped the Penang tourism industry overcome challenges but also laid the foundation for its future development. He emphasized that the Penang tourism industry will continue to be dedicated to providing unique travel experiences for visitors and attracting more tourists through innovative approaches and he is confident that this team of delegates from Penang will demonstrate the best of Penang to Chinese tourism industry players and tourists.
