SABAH:

Minister Jafry Ariffin said that the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Environment is to obtain RM6 million under the 12th Plan for Malaysia (12MP) to proceed with the Heart of Borneo (HoB), a biodiversity conservation initiative.

He added that the allocation of 4.2 million hectares of the forest of HoB in Sabah out of a total of six million hectares of HoB forest in Sabah is very important for sustainable forest management and efforts to conserve biodiversities through the state forest network.

"The government is committed to increasing fully protected areas to 30 per cent or at least 2.1 million hectares by 2025 as well as restoring destroyed forests through forest restoration programmes," he said in a statement.

The HoB has been enforcing a 2007 Declaration on the Conservation of Biodiversity in Borneo, which in turn benefits all who depend on biodiversity, as a result of cooperation with Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei.

Dr Shamsul Nasarah has approved the HoB RM11.26 million, and Sabah had received RM 6 million to proceed with the HB Declaration Initiative, according to Datuk Jafry Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

He said that a total of RM54 million was channelized to the Sabah Forest Depaertment after the introduction of HoB at Sabah in 2008 at 9MP to 11MP.

He said that the pride in achieving HoB to date has consisted of adding 22 outdoor posts installed at hot areas with an expansion to 1,1 million hectares of protected area, as well as establishing forest recreational areas such as the Tawai Rainforest Camp and the Sabah Centre.

"Public awareness programmes such as Environment Education and HoB Roadshows involving teachers, students and villagers in the HoB areas are also held," he said.
