SEOUL:

The Ministry of Culture in South Korea said Tuesday it will concentrate here on reviving the culture and tourism affected by the pandemic and on continuing to encourage the propagation of "hallyu," (the Korean wave) across the world in 2021.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism sets out the strategy by placing out four policy priorities for the year, divided into 15 items on the agenda, such as supporting sectors that have emerged from the latest coronavirus, encouraging content creators to digitize, improving the promotion of Korean content and promoting Korean language and culture education abroad.

As part of this initiative, the Ministry stated that it plans to issue a 51.6 billion won (USD 46.1 million) accommodation coupon and to extend loans and postpone loan repayment to business affected by the pandemic.

In order to help content producers move to digital, non-contact platforms, the Ministry stated that it plans to expand the relevant platforms. The plan includes spending 26.5 billion won to build a K-pop event venue and support the production of K-pop material.

While the pandemic has halted international travel and cultural exchanges, the ministry has announced that it aims to target potential tourists by improving Korean culture promotions and enlarging the number of Korean linguistic institutes and teachers.

"In 2021, the culture ministry will put in all our efforts into making a year where the lives of people recover through culture and our society becomes more embracing and leaps into a leading country in the world," Minister Park Yang-woo said.
