BANGKOK:

Thai Airways International (THAI) management has said to its staff that it will not lay off its staff in the immediate future and a reorganization plan is going to be completed in about a year.

Acting THAI president Chakkrit Parapuntakul sent the message to staff in a televised meeting at the airline’s head office.

He said management met with investors including aircraft managers, investors, and trading partners, and requested workers to do everything possible to help minimize costs for the company. He said he had no thoughts about the future of aviation after COVID- 19, but he thought that THAI would survive a recovery program.

Chakkrit said that THAI would decrease routes and fleet number and type of aircraft.

He said the country would probably restart its international flight services on July 1, but that the business would also depend on disease control measures in the countries of destination. THAI can, however, highlight flat rates and online ticket sales.

Chakkrit said workers would maintain their THAI condition and would not be fired until now, pending an airline rehabilitation program. Within a year, the strategy would be going to take shape.

Restructuring and a definite path for companies did not entail major dismissals and employees could be rotated and qualified to work for successful facilities, he said.

He added that management needed to voluntarily ask employees to cut their wages in order to maintain the cash flow because the airline was not currently able to borrow from any source.
