MALAYSIA :

Many people's first thoughts when they hear the word "Maldives" are rows of opulent overwater houses jutting out from long wooden docks or lovely beaches lined with impossibly white sand.

But despite being one of the most sought-after tourist spots in the world and a paradise for scuba divers, scientists believe there is still much they don't know about the underwater ecosystems of the Maldives.

By beginning an ambitious trip into the nation's uncharted waters, the Maldivian government and UK marine research institute Nekton hope to solve some of those riddles.

Two cutting-edge submersibles, one of which can dive as deep as 1,000 meters, will be used as part of the Nekton Maldives Mission, which debuts on September 4 and brings together scientific teams from the Maldives and overseas, to conduct in-depth study below 30 meters.

The objective is to assist the Maldives in minimizing the effects of the world climate catastrophe.

"The Maldives, which are located on average 1.5 meters above the sea, is made up of 99% ocean and 1% land. As a result, the nation is increasingly threatened by rising sea levels "a statement from Nekton reads.
