KUALA LUMPUR:

In order not to prevent the spread of Covid-19, other than continuing to ban cross-state travel, the ministry of Tourism, the arts and culture (Motac) hopes there would be a new approach.

Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, Minister of Tourism, said this was because people are required to move from one location to another in the tourism sector.

“When there is no movement, it means there is no tourism and also no economic activities, so it also means no jobs and income for those who have been working in this industry.

“Therefore, I hope for a meeting point which can balance health and people’s well-being,” she said in a statement.

According to Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, which stated that it would be possible to travel cross-district and cross-State when the vaccine had already been given to between 70 and 80 per cent of the population, Nancy said she respected Dr Noor Hisham's expertise and views on curbing the spread of the viral infection.

“However, at the same time, I am worried that the statement could have a worse impact on the local tourism industry which has already been adversely affected for a year by the pandemic.

“I am not only talking of its impact on the country’s economy but also thinking about the livelihoods and survival of those in the local tourism industry,” she added.

Nancy therefore looks forward to new ways of enabling cross-border travel for the benefit of local tourism industries.

Dr Noor Hisham has also stated that the country could achieve herd immunity within the next six-to-nine months with people adhering to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and taking the Covid-19 vaccine.
