MALAYSIA:

With the Covid-19 pandemic having put the brakes on physical events, tourism players have turned to cyberspace to entice potential holidaymakers.

The first-ever Virtual Tourism Expo 2021 (VTE2021), which will be held from Aug 27 to 29 from 10am to 10pm, is one such event.

It hopes to draw more than two million online visitors, who upon registration, can take "virtual walks" to visit virtual exhibits offered by some 120 tourism players participating in the expo.

Its organiser, Digital Travel Technology Association of Malaysia (DiTTAM) said it hopes the event will bring hope and positivity to tourism players following uncertainties on the resumption of tourism activities due to the pandemic.

DiTTAM president Rohizam Md Yusof said industry players can use the expo as a virtual marketing platform, where they can be directly involved in offering domestic tourism packages and services.

He said the expo was also the first step towards helping tourism players nationwide embrace digital transformation.

"Exhibitors only need to know how to upload their videos, photos as well as virtual cards online, as they can set up their exhibition booth according to our manual," he said at the online launch of VTE2021 today.

The expo is supported by Tourism Malaysia, state tourism offices as well as local tourism operators.

Rohizam said 30 per cent of the exhibitors comprise travel agencies while between 40 to 50 per cent were hoteliers and tourism associations.

Exhibitors' booths, he said, were divided among 12 halls, which online visitors would get to visit in 3D during their tour.

"We have also converted gaming technology to fit the exhibition mode so visitors can get to enjoy exciting new experiences during their visit."

He said VTE2021 visitors would also have the opportunity to interact live with exhibitors as well as purchase tourism deals.

Rohizam said bargain hunters would enjoy the discounts and offers at the expo as they have a longer validity period given that the resumption of physical travel remains uncertain for now.
