HANOI:

Vietnam is actively exploring strategies and enhancing infrastructure to develop its halal tourism sector, a niche yet rapidly growing segment of global travel fueled by the increasing demand from Muslim travellers worldwide.

With over 1.9 billion Muslims globally, halal tourism is emerging as a major economic opportunity. According to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA), the global halal tourism market was valued at approximately USD 266 billion in 2023, expected to rise to USD 276 billion in 2024 and reach USD 350 billion by 2030.

Recognising the vast potential, Vietnam has initiated several key measures to position itself as a Muslim-friendly destination. On 14 February 2023, the government approved a national strategy titled “Enhancing International Cooperation to Develop Vietnam’s Halal Industry by 2030.”

This led to the establishment of the Vietnam Halal Certification Authority (HALCERT) and the development of national standards for Halal-related products and services. The tourism sector has also intensified its promotional efforts to attract Muslim visitors, particularly from Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Dr. Trinh Thi Thu Ha, Rector of the Hanoi College of Commerce and Tourism, highlighted that halal tourism is no longer a trend but a critical segment shaping global tourism development. She emphasized that Vietnam must adapt to Muslim travellers’ religious and cultural requirements to fully benefit from this growing market.

However, despite these initiatives, Vietnam still grapples with challenges in providing adequate Muslim-friendly facilities. HALCERT Director Ramlan Osman pointed out that successful halal tourism hinges on specific criteria such as Halal-certified food, prayer facilities, Ramadan-friendly services, privacy in recreational areas, and family-oriented tour options.

“Vietnamese food is globally admired, but if it is not Halal, Muslim tourists simply cannot consume it,” Ramlan stressed, underlining the urgent need for increased Halal-certified food offerings.

As Vietnam takes its first strategic steps into halal tourism, bridging these gaps will be key to capturing a significant share of this multi-billion-dollar market.
