New Delhi:

India has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform its tourism sector into a $1 trillion industry by 2030, contributing over 9% to the nation’s GDP. This bold vision reflects a major shift in focus—from international arrivals to domestic tourism—empowering local travel, infrastructure development, and experiential tourism as key drivers of growth.

Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced the national goal, emphasizing the role of domestic travel and spiritual experiences in shaping India’s future as a global tourism leader. With a growing aspirational middle class, India aims to position itself as a top destination for culture, heritage, and wellness travel.

The government is rolling out major initiatives, including the development of 50 new destinations, enhanced infrastructure, and incentives for private investment. Tourism has also been reclassified as an infrastructure sector, unlocking funding and partnerships to drive growth.

Spiritual tourism is a key focus, with sites like Varanasi, Rameswaram, and Kedarnath attracting millions seeking purpose and connection. The government plans to upgrade facilities at such destinations, ensuring cleanliness, accessibility, and digital integration to meet global standards.

States have been called upon to innovate, transforming static monuments into immersive, multi-sensory destinations. The Ministry of Tourism also urges the corporate sector to support MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) tourism within India, fostering a strong domestic events ecosystem.

Minister Shekhawat stressed the importance of collaboration between governments, private players, and communities to realise this vision. With policy support, financial incentives, and a commitment to inclusivity, India is on track to redefine its tourism landscape by 2030—turning travel into a powerful engine of economic and cultural growth.
