From August 18, restaurant-bars, pubs, bars, and nightclubs in the Boat Quay and Clarke Quay precincts will be able to apply for liquor licence extensions until 4am on Thursdays and Fridays, under a year-long pilot programme aimed at revitalising the area’s nightlife.
The initiative will also end a 16-year moratorium on new nightlife establishments in the district, allowing businesses to submit proposals for bars, pubs, and nightclubs along the Boat Quay waterfront, Circular Road, Lorong Telok, and Canton Street. Approved venues may be granted temporary permission for up to three years.
As part of broader placemaking efforts, Circular Road will return to a car-free zone on Friday and Saturday evenings and the eve of public holidays, creating space for events and pedestrian-friendly activities.
Authorities said the regulatory changes follow positive law-and-order conditions in recent years and extensive consultations with stakeholders including the Singapore Nightlife Business Association (SNBA) and Singapore River One (SRO). Businesses will be expected to step up private security measures and work closely with agencies to ensure responsible management.
Industry groups welcomed the move, citing the potential for increased revenue, fresh concepts, and renewed vibrancy in one of Singapore’s most iconic nightlife districts.
