Perak has officially claimed the top spot as Malaysia’s leading domestic tourism destination, recording an impressive 10.2 million local visitors in 2023, according to the latest Domestic Tourism Survey 2024 by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
The figure represents a 36.1% surge from the 7.5 million domestic tourists recorded in 2022, placing Perak ahead of Selangor (9.6 million) and Pahang (9.5 million) in visitor numbers.
Chairman of the State Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee, YB Loh Sze Yee, attributed the record-breaking achievement to the success of the Visit Perak Year 2023 campaign, underpinned by strong collaboration between federal and state-level stakeholders.
“This accomplishment is a collective effort involving government agencies, local councils, NGOs, district offices, businesses, and the rakyat. It highlights Perak’s growing prominence as a must-visit destination for domestic travellers,” said Loh in a statement.
Popular attractions contributing to the surge include Teluk Batik, Lumut Waterfront, Gunung Lang Recreational Park, Ipoh Night Market, and the ever-popular Pangkor Island. High visitor traffic was particularly noted in the districts of Kinta, Larut and Matang, Manjung, Kuala Kangsar, and Batang Padang.
Looking ahead, Loh called for sustained momentum and renewed investment in the tourism sector, especially with the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
“Only four states, including Perak and Melaka, rolled out state-level tourism campaigns in 2023. With all states now preparing for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, the competition will be intense. Perak must continue to lead through innovation and quality offerings,” he added.
Perak’s stellar performance is seen as a key driver of regional economic growth, supporting local businesses and enhancing community livelihoods through tourism.
