Malaysia and Uzbekistan have strengthened their commitment to expanding bilateral economic ties, following a high-level meeting between Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in the Uzbek capital.
The meeting, which lasted over an hour, built on the momentum from President Mirziyoyev’s official visit to Malaysia earlier this year. Discussions focused on expanding trade, improving air connectivity, and fostering collaboration in strategic sectors such as energy, tourism, and manufacturing.
Both parties explored opportunities for joint investments in green energy, oil and gas, chemicals, and semiconductor production. The leaders also discussed the importance of expanding direct flight routes to boost tourism and business exchanges between the two nations.
In 2024, trade between Malaysia and Uzbekistan reached RM369.8 million, with Malaysia enjoying a significant surplus of RM360.3 million. Uzbekistan is currently Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner in Central Asia.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment of both nations to explore untapped economic potential and forge stronger partnerships across key growth sectors.
