The Ministry of Tourism reported foreign tourist arrivals in 2024 increased by 19% to reach 13.9 million compared to 2023. In December 2024 alone, the number of foreign tourists was 1.24 million or up 8.72% compared to the same month in 2023.
Malaysian tourists remain the top source of foreign tourists. It has been the largest contributor since 2022, with a total of 2.27 million people in 2024, followed by tourists from Australia, Singapore, China, Timor-Leste and India.
The ministry also noted that Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali was the busiest entry point with a total of 6.3 million foreign tourists coming in. The Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta ranked second with 2.52 million people, and Batam Port with 1.31 million.
Meanwhile, the average spending of foreign tourists in 2024 reached US$1,391 with the highest expenditures being on accommodation, food and beverages, and souvenir shopping.
“The largest spending contribution came from tourists from European countries,” the Ministry reported.
In 2024, Indonesia’s tourism foreign exchange earnings were about US$16.7 billion, up 19.3% compared to US$14.63 billion in 2023. The government also estimated contribution of the tourism sector to the national GDP in 2024 ranged from 4.01% to 4.5%.
In terms of tourism-related jobs in 2025, the government estimated it would reach 25.01 million or a rise of 2.5% compared to 24.41 million workers in 2024.
The hotel room occupancy rate (TPK) for star-classified hotels also showed a positive trend. In 2024, the occupancy rate reached 52.57%, an increase of 1.45 percentage points from 51.12% in 2023.
Meanwhile, the number of domestic tourist trips in 2024 reached 1.02 billion trips, an increase of 21.61% compared to 2023, which recorded 839.66 million trips.
The Island of Java is still a favourite destination for domestic tourists, accounting for 69.19% of trips. East Java, West Java and Central Java were the most visited regions by domestic tourists.
