Kuala Lumpur::

 The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture will cease registration of Short Term Residential Accommodation (STRA) beginning this Saturday as the government regulates short-term rental activities.

The authorities could take action if the accommodation premises owners or agents fail to comply with the stipulated requirements.

“To ensure uniformity of government policies related to STRA, all hosts or premises owners will no longer need to register under the ministry from that date,” the statement said.

It said previously the registrations were aimed at helping the ministry obtain data and statistics to formulate policies and strategies in line with current trends.

It said the government had received numerous positive and negative feedback from industry players and the public on STRA activities.

Its minister Mohamaddin Ketapi had announced that the ministry was responsible for registering all tourist accommodation premises, including registration of hosts or agents conducting short-term residential accommodation activities using the “Home Sharing Economy” model in accordance with the provisions of the Tourism Industry Act 1992.
