PENANG:

A group of 11 media organizations from Penang recently embarked on a media familiarization trip to Chennai, India, from March 3rd to 5th, 2025. This initiative coincides with the launch of IndiGo Airlines’ direct flight between Penang and Chennai, marking a significant step in fostering tourism and cultural exchange between the two regions.

The main objective of the media trip is to generate interest among Penang residents in Chennai as a vibrant travel destination, ensuring continued demand for the new direct flight. Through compelling media coverage, the delegation aims to showcase Chennai’s diverse attractions, rich cultural heritage, and unique travel experiences, thus encouraging cross-border tourism growth.

During the trip, the media delegation visited Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its ancient rock-cut temples and intricate sculptures that reflect India’s rich history. They also explored Chennai’s dynamic blend of modernity and tradition, along with Kanchipuram, a city renowned for its stunning temples.

YB Wong Yuee Harng, Director of the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau, expressed the Penang State Government’s full support for the initiative. "This media trip plays a key role in broadening travel opportunities and strengthening economic and cultural ties between Penang and Chennai," he said.

Ashwin Gunasekeran, CEO of the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau, emphasized the significance of the trip. "Through extensive media exposure, we aim to raise awareness of Chennai’s tourism offerings, ensuring the success of the new direct flight while fostering stronger collaborations in both tourism and business. This initiative aligns with Penang’s broader vision of expanding its presence in key markets."

The media trip is also part of Penang's long-term tourism strategy, which focuses on enhancing regional connectivity and unlocking economic benefits through increased travel between Penang and Chennai. By promoting this new flight route, the initiative not only encourages exploration but also reinforces Penang’s position as a premier hub for both business and leisure tourism.
