PETALING JAYA :

Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) is adding to its Kelina Jaya Light Rail Transit (LRT) line 27  four-coach trains worth RM 1,7 billion to cater for the increasing number of passengers.

Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, its group chairman, said two groups were already obtained and were in the process of mantling in Port Klang, Westport, while the remainder will be completed in stages by 2023.

“Besides increasing capacity (of commuters) especially during the morning and evening peak hours, the new trains will enhance comfort as well as maintain train frequency to an average of 2.5 minutes,” he said in a press conference held after a working visit to the LRT depot.

He said the Kelana Jaya LRT line currently serves more than 300,000 daily passengers by 84 trains, including 35 two-coach trains.

He added that more than 900 passengers can accommodate four-coach trains and over 200 on two-coach trains.

“With the increase in trains, we hope to achieve our target of increasing the number of commuters by seven percent each year,” he said, adding that the LRT lines were the busiest network of rail services managed by Rapid Rail.

He said Prasarana also plans to send its staff to train abroad to improve their abilities and reduce their reliance on import suppliers.
