PENANG :

The tourism industry is among the worst-hit sectors during this Covid-19 pandemic. It is the first industry to shut down and the last one to be allowed to operate again. After months of the various stage of lockdowns, the interstate travel ban was lifted on October 11. This news came as a relief for family members to be reunited and for the tourism industry to be restarted with those who are fully vaccinated being allowed to travel.
Penang has been seeing high arrival traffic of domestic tourists again.

However, as the industry is slowly recovering from the pandemic, more has to be done to bring the industry back to its feet again. Next year will be another exciting year for Penang tourism as we bring you more excitement and deals as well as efforts in lending a hand to industry players.

Hereby, the Penang State Government is honoured to announce that Penang lass Datuk Nicol David has been appointed as the Penang Tourism Ambassador for Year 2022. Her appointment will see her playing a role in boosting the image for tourism of Penang both domestically and internationally. People will get to see a different side of her, roaming around the streets, tasting our delicacies and trying various tourist attractions in Penang.

“This appointment is also a way for the state to recognize Penang talents, across different fields and genders. Her illustrious decades of achievement in squash is a feat to be proud of, including winning all the major tournaments in squash and holding the world number one title for a recordbreaking of 108 consecutive months. She was also crowned the World Games' Greatest Athlete of All Time this year,” said Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE), YB Yeoh Soon Hin at the press conference at E&O Hotel today.

With the tagline of “My Hometown, Penang Welcomes You”, Nicol will be highlighting places of interest and things to do in Penang, from her own perspective. Let her bring you around this culturally diverse place that is also rich with heritage trails and nature sceneries, apart from its lip-smacking street food and hospitable community that has already earning a place in the heart of those who has set their feet in this Pearl of Orient before.

“It has been my long-cherished dream to contribute back to my beloved state. Now that I have retired from squash, it is the right time to tell more stories of Penang to people out there. I’ve been away from home for a very long time. As I’ve retired, I can now spend more time in my hometown and focus on other things that I enjoy in life, other than sports. So let me show you what Penang has to offer. I hope my voice can bring a big impact to state tourism. We will bounce back!” said Nicol.

Nicol is also now working on her biopic “I Am Nicol David”, which will give audiences an insight into the rarely told personal life of the Malaysian icon and launch her foundation called “The Nicol David Organization” to empower girls and boys through sports and education.

Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow who was also present lauded Nicol’s willingness in working with the state government in bringing back the glory of state tourism.

Also gracing the event was His Excellency Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Ahmad Fuzi bin Haji Abdul Razak, the Penang State Governor.
