Sri Lanka Tourism returns to the Spanish market after the pandemic

Spain is one of the markets for Sri Lankan tourism that has recovered the quickest from the pandemic, and participation in FITUR helps to promote Sri Lanka as a desirable travel destination for Spanish-speaking nations, supporting the country's overall growth strategy. 


28 private sector companies from Sri Lanka Tourism participated at the 43rd FITUR International Travel Mart, which took place from January 18–22 in Madrid, Spain. 


The largest tourist event in Spain, FITUR brings together the leisure, business, and MICE tourism sectors all under one roof. 


The honorary consul of Sri Lanka in Barcelona, Agustin Llana, as well as representatives from the private sector and travel agencies, opened the Sri Lanka Tourism stall. Chalaka Gajabahu is the chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau. 


The Sri Lankan pavilion showcased a variety of the potential culture, natural beauty, Ayurveda, and other attractions that Sri Lanka may provide as a travel destination. The "So Sri Lanka" and "Visit Sri Lanka" vibrant sights were optimized on the Sri Lanka booth to draw in the target visitor segments. 
Ceylon tea was provided to guests at the Sri Lanka pavilion to promote Ceylon tea in the Spanish market. 


Officials from the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau attended the UNWTO activities that were held concurrently with FITUR, the international travel trade show. SLTPB representatives met Harry Hwang, director of the UNWTO's regional department for Asia and the Pacific, at the events. Hwang expressed interest in hosting the UNWTO Joint Commission in Sri Lanka the following year after the meetings. 


Additionally, preparations were taken by the SLTPB and the Sri Lankan Embassy of France to set up business meetings, exclusive media interviews, and airline meetings at FITUR 2023. During the fair's media gathering, there was a fantastic opportunity to highlight recent destination changes and create awareness of the destination.
