Batu Ferringhi’s iconic beachfront is set for a major revival, as the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) has greenlit a RM61 million allocation to rehabilitate the 7km coastal stretch from Batu Ferringhi to Tanjung Bungah.
Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir announced that the restoration will reverse coastal erosion that has plagued the popular tourist belt, hampering beach activities and threatening the area’s natural charm.
“The condition of the beaches has deteriorated, and we aim to restore them without compromising their beauty. Large boulders won’t be used—we’re focused on aesthetics and function,” he said during a visit to the Paramount Fishermen’s Unit jetty.
The project will involve re-sanding efforts and improved outfall systems for three rivers—Sungai Mas, Sungai Kechil, and Sungai Kelian—to reduce erosion risk and ensure smooth river-sea water flow. Managed by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), the initiative is part of the Fifth Rolling Plan under the 12th Malaysia Plan and will span six years.
A separate proposal is also under review to rehabilitate the beachfront from the Paramount jetty to Gurney Drive, pending further approvals.
