PENANG:

According to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, a public transit hub will be constructed at the lower station of the Penang Hill Cable Car project next to the Botanic Gardens.

He stated that the station would provide parking spaces for e-hailing drivers, tour buses, and public buses.

"A properly thought-out traffic control system will be in place.

In addition, there is a multi-story parking structure, he said Wednesday at a news conference held at Komtar.

"The project is renowned as one of the most environmentally friendly public transport options for urban, suburban, and rural locations.

"The cable vehicles are powered by electricity and produce relatively little noise pollution.

He said that a comprehensive strategy will be used to ensure that the project would become a top-tier attraction. "The construction of cable cars requires minimal cutting of trees so this will not bring detrimental effects to the environment," he said.

According to Chow, the Penang Botanic Gardens' surrounding districts would also be made more attractive as part of Hartasuma's anticipated investment of at least RM245 million.

"Both residents and tourists will benefit from the project. For everyone's comfort, it will considerably improve the area's amenities and facilities, he said. In three years, the project is anticipated to be operational.

On the project, Hartasuma will collaborate with the Dopplemayr Group of Austria.

With over 15,100 installations completed for clients in 96 countries, Dopplemayr is a market leader on the international scale in the production of ropeways and people movers.

The 43 gondola cabins of the cable car system will be able to carry 1,000 passengers each hour at a speed of 6 meters per second. There will be 15 towers along the railway, and it will take 10 minutes to get from the lower to the top station.
