Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has once again taken a leading role in advancing tourism education with the successful completion of the third edition of its Professional Certification Program in Tourism Management (POLIKK-UMT).

Held from 25 November 2024 to 27 February 2025, the comprehensive three-month program saw 11 lecturers from polytechnics and community colleges across Malaysia enhance their competencies in tourism management. The initiative, spearheaded by UMT’s LIFE Centre, reflects the university’s growing reputation as a key driver of high-impact, career-focused education aligned with national aspirations.

Backed by the Ministry of Higher Education, the program underscores UMT’s capacity to deliver quality training tailored to the needs of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) educators. It also supports the broader national agenda of lifelong learning and industry-aligned education in the face of evolving technological and sustainability trends.

Participants undertook a rigorous 95-day curriculum combining theoretical and practical training. Among the key modules were micro-credential certifications such as the Local Nature Tourism Guide Course (Level 2), Malaysia-Friendly Tourism Course, and Muslim Tourism and Hospitality Course — all aimed at equipping educators for the tourism industry of tomorrow.

UMT’s strong industry ties were central to the program’s success. Strategic collaborations with stakeholders such as the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC), Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN), and Cert Academy Sdn Bhd ensured that training remained aligned with current industry standards and expectations.

Expert trainers and guest lecturers from various sectors added depth and relevance to the learning experience, providing real-world insights that resonated with participants. The high level of engagement throughout the program reflected the lecturers’ commitment to both reskilling and upskilling, preparing them to lead innovation and transformation within their institutions.
