SARAWAK:

Sarawakians are urged to promote tourist destinations and landmarks in their local communities, particularly in rural locations with the potential to draw both domestic and foreign visitors.

Dennis Ngau, chairman of the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), expressed optimism and confidence that the state can welcome at least 3 million people this year in light of the state's excellent January and February visitor numbers.

"We need all of you — Sarawakians — to transform into tourism goods to do this. Many people believe that tourism products only consist of hotels and resorts, but in reality, people make up the majority of the industry.

At a meeting with participants of STB's Sarawak Product Experience (SPE) program on March 29, he said: "If we are good to the people, undoubtedly (the visitors) who come to Sarawak will have a pleasant experience and they would tell their experiences to their friends and family."

Dennis stated during the presentation that hundreds of tourist attractions in the state are being introduced and promoted.

As a result, he also pleaded with members of the media and the tourism industry to advertise such destinations.

After speaking to the participants, Dennis indicated to the press that Kampung Sapit's surroundings were already suitable for development as a tourism destination.

But he added that it needs strong marketing to draw more visitors, as well as the know-how to further promote and beautify the neighborhood to live up to their expectations.

"This is one of the items that may be promoted because this location is close to the city and has adequate road connections in my opinion. Although some people might find it frightening to drive, doing so is fun.

"I'm glad that the community here was able to create a location to support their culture and way of life. We need this because we can't wait for the government to create it; else, it won't be compatible with the local circumstances and surroundings.

So, he speculated, "maybe other Sarawak locations with comparable circumstances to Kampung Sapit can develop into tourism goods."
