PENANG:

Spotlight, a national art competition organised by Penang Art District, gives up-and-coming artists a chance to exhibit their works, have their portfolios evaluated, and take part in a rigorous mentorship programme. This serves as a platform for nurturing the skills of young Malaysian artists. For aspiring artists thirty years of age and under, Spotlight 2023 is an open call that accepts applications from all throughout Malaysia.

The top 20 entries will advance to the next level and be displayed in a group show in Penang. The Grand Prize winner will receive RM5,000 in cash, a solo exhibition in Penang, and mentoring with a mentor of their choosing (to be organised by PAD). In addition, up to five Jury's Choice Awards, each with a RM1,000 cash reward, will be given away.

Spotlight is more than an art competition- it’s a transformative journey for young, burgeoning artists. This initiative opens doors to a mentorship odyssey with seasoned art professionals, culminating in a solo exhibition to showcase their evolving artistic narratives. Fuelled by the triumphs and enthusiasm of the past five years, we proudly embark on the sixth iteration of Spotlight, infused with a heightened zeal to kindle creativity and nurture the flourishing talents of emerging artists.

Born from a collective desire to empower young and audacious artists, Spotlight has grown beyond being an event; it is a testament to the transformative power of art and the vibrant spirit of community.

As the years unfolded, Spotlight evolved into a dynamic community—a hub for creative minds, an intersection where innovation met tradition. It has witnessed the birth of narratives, the emergence of talents, and the evolution of artistic voices that resonate far beyond the confines of its exhibition walls.
Spotlight stands not only as an event but it is a milestone for young artists, launching them towards a bigger stage.

This year, the canvas expanded as they received a diverse array of over 120 entries from every corner of Malaysia. The artworks spanned a rich spectrum of mediums- acrylics, oil paintings, collages, mixed media, wood, and canvas.
“As the Penang State ExCO for Creative Economy & Tourism, I pledge our unwavering commitment to the arts and culture within our state. We are devoted to nurturing the talents of your youth, fostering international collaborations, and creating an environment where artists can not only thrive but also serve as inspirations to others.” YB Wong Hon Wai said.

Spotlight by Penang Art District announced UOB Malaysia as the main sponsor and China House as the venue sponsor for Spotlight 2023, whose contributions have been instrumental in making this endeavour a success
