In order to market Penang to a larger audience in China, Penang Global Tourism (PGT) has struck an agreement with MEIIOI Group Media Communication Co Ltd and Asia Tours Satellite TV International Media Group Co Ltd.
The strategic alliance, according to Jeffrey Yeoh, chief executive officer of MEIIOI Group, would provide free advertising for Penang tourism throughout China, Hong Kong, and Macau through the mass media platform.
At today's MoU signing event, he told reporters, "Penang has quickly recovered 60% of its tourist business and is anticipated to recover 100% this year owing to the stable and active administration.
Yeoh claimed that with more marketing, the Penang tourist sector will have greater possibilities.
Meanwhile, Penang state executive councillor for tourism and creative economy Yeoh Soon Hin said China has always been an important market for Penang as it is among the top three countries for tourists coming to Penang.
“With the reopening of China's borders, China Southern Airlines and Cathay Pacific have also resumed direct flights to the Greater Bay Area, bringing more tourists to Penang.
“Starting in August, AirAsia's flights to Hong Kong will also be officially launched to provide more convenience for tourists travelling between the two places,” he said.
He added that he has begun to actively target the Chinese market and accelerate the economic cooperation between Penang and various provinces and cities in China in preparation for the golden 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China next year.
